Thursday, 21st March - Radisson Hotel 11.00pm
|
| Universal City - City Walk |
 |
|
The planned early start didn't materialise. Having woken up at 5am for no apparent reason
I pottered around until 7am and then fell asleep, waking at 8.30. Drawing back the curtains revealed the best
possible weather - blue skies and Summery weather, but without being too hot. After an excellent buffet breakfast
I set off for Universal City, which houses shops, the studio tours and theme park rides, and is, according to
the hotel information "30-40 minutes away" More like an hour and a half after all the wrong turns I took!

All day parking is available for $7, which is a bargain as you get to park really close to the main
Universal Studios entrance and also the main thoroughfare of shops, called City Walk. This one ticket also allows you
to leave and re-enter Universal City car parks all day long without incurring any extra charges.
City Walk is a clean walkway with a mixture
of film merchandise shops, restuarants, snack stalls, and 3D and IMAX Cinemas, has no admission charge and is a fascinating
trip out in itself. Think of a smaller, but more up-market Blackpool and you've got the gist of it!
However, City Walkway tends to have different "core hours", than the rest of Universal City. When I
arrived at 10.30am, very few of the stores and restaurants were open. The City Walk is at its liveliest after 6.30pm
when the main theme park and studio tours close down. Browsing the stores, I found all kinds of memorabilia, my favourite
being a life-size "Robbie the Robot" from the original TV series "Lost in Space", one of only 100 that
were made. This was on sale in a store called "Them!" and was a snip at just $20,000!
As you get to the end of City Walk you get to a 3D sculpture of the Universal globe logo, a sign that you have reached the
main entrance.
