'The Lord of the Rings' may have swept the oscars (eleven oscars awarded for eleven nominations!) with the high-profile Hollywood parties all wanting the oscar winners to attend, but it seemed there was only one group of people Peter Jackson and his crew wanted to celebrate with - their fans in attendance at oscar party. The TORn party was the first on the winners schedule, but this was no 'token five minute appearance' as cast and crew spent some time celebrating and sharing anecdotes with the nearly 1000 fans who'd bought tickets for this, the third oscar party organised by The list of cast and crew attending is a long one, and in fact it would be easier to name those oscar attendees who didn't attend (Sean Astin, Ian McKellen and Howard Shore) rather than those who did. A full report will follow, but in the meantime here are some sound bites and pictures from what was for most attendees the biggest and best oscar party to date.

Oscar winner Ngila Dickson arrives at the party
The irrepresible Dominic Monaghan
Billy Boyd regaled the crowd with a song
Sala Baker (Sauron) and Lawrence Makoare (Lurtz)

Michael Regina (Xoanon) (to the fans): 'Clean' and 'sweep' are my two new favourite words!

John Rhys-Davies (to the fans): What are you going to do with your lives now? You just can't wait for 'The Hobbit' can you?! I think you're going to have to have this party every year until 'The Hobbit' comes out! You've obviously made a lot of friends amongst yourselves and you have won us [the cast and crew] a huge following of friends. We really thank you for it. You are exceptional people and we love it here!

Elijah Wood (to the press): It's an honour to be at this party!

Unidentified Oscar Winner (to the press): We're on top of the world tonight. This is New Zealand's best day.'s party's the best. Everyone's said come here first rather than the New Line party. Not to knock New Line but this is the party we wanted to come to.

Oscar Winner, Richard Taylor (to the press): Why are we here? party of course. All the fans who've looked after us so well over the last seven years - it's lovely to say 'Hi' to them all!

Oscar Winner, Barrie Osborne (to the press, explaining his oscar awards ceremony comment about having dated Billy Crystal's niece): Did I really date Billy Crystal's niece? I did! At Junior High School but I didn't know it at the time

Oscar Winner, Peter Jackson (to the press): Why are we at We love our fans and they're one of the reasons we've worked so hard to put these films together!

Oscar Winner, Peter Jackson (to the fans): Thanks for all the incredible support you've given us all through the years. And you didn't give us too much shit when we cut Tom Bombadil out. One of the things that really motivated us was that we were absolutely terrified of letting you guys down. We really didn't want to disappoint you. We're really appreciative of the response. We understand the criticism that you've given us from time to time. We're very sorry for the things that we couldn't get right. We have at all times had total respect for our fans. I think that's very important - you've had respect for us and we hope we've returned that. I hope this is not the end! The best thing you could do is have a very subtle mass letter campaign, very subtle, very polite to New Line's boys and MGM's boys telling them to sort The Hobbit rights out. Let's not shut down!

Oscar Winner, Peter Jackson (to the fans): I'm sure most of you have heard me blabbing off in the past few weeks but we've just finished the extended cut of the DVD. I finished the edit before I came over here - these poor bastards at Weta have got another 350 effects shots to do! They're well on the way. Elijah's seen the extended cut. New Line have announced some box set that's supposed to be coming out which I didn't know anything about. When I've done 'King Kong' I'd like to do a proper box set and we've got a whole bunch of material - not of the movie but we've got a whole lot of bloopers out there! When King Kong's out the way I'd like to do a really high definition version with the best possbile picture quality.

Oscar Winner, Grant Major (to the fans): It's like a rock concert here. It's great to finish on such a high note. Thanks for all your screaming and support!

Unidentified Sound Editing Oscar Winner (to the fans): You guys rock! Last year was stunning. You guys did us crazy last year [at the party] and we had a great time. This year we came back. This is as good as the crowd we had at the stadium in Wellington Stadium when we recorded all the sound effects

Oscar Winner, Peter Jackson (to the fans): Ngilla got nominated for two movies. But there is some justice in the world, and the best film won [laughs].

Oscar Winner, Ngilla Dickson (to the fans): Peter's such a style icon, isn't he?! I'd just like to say I'm the one who got to see all these actors with their clothes off!

Oscar Winner, Alex Funke (to the fans): We've got just one little pick up shot left to do [for the extended DVD] and then we're done!

Oscar Winner, Fran Walsh (to the fans): Thank you for all the support you've given us. It's really kept us going. Thank you!

Oscar Winner, Richard Taylor (to the fans): When the world was doubting us you never did! And you continued to give us the confidence and the praise, so thank you! It's been an amazing journey, and what a great way to end it - with all of you here tonight!

Oscar Winner, Barrie Osborne (to the fans): In the beginning I remember we tried to keep some distance from and then one day we were shooting at Hobbiton and Peter said to me 'You know, why don't we invite Erica Challis in?!' - and that started the greatest relationship as you all know. You supported us since way before then and that spirit of co-operation, the respect that you showed our film in controlling the information that was released and supporting us was great. So thank you very much for that!

Dominic Monaghan (to the fans): Elijah, Billy and I agreed tonight that if we come here we'll answer ANY question, so what do you want to know? Boxers or briefs? I don't wear anything!

Oscar Winner, Peter Jackson (to the fans): There's a complicated story... you'll have to listen to this. It's just something that we are going to put on the DVD in November for the extended Return of the King. There's this really funny thing that involved these two guys [points at:] Elijah and Dom. We were in Berlin doing our junket before the premiere of the film. All of us were over there doing press every day where they sit you down in front of cameras and you do all this press, except Elijah couldn't be in Berlin - he was in New York. I think he was doing the 'Saturday Night Live' thing but what Elijah agreed to do very kindly was to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning in New York and sit in front of a camera so that the journalists in Berlin could interview him live since he couldn't be there. So Elijah's in a situation where he's in a room at 4 o'clock in the morning and he has no pictures to look at - there's just a camera pointing at him and he has an earphone on. He's live and he can hear the interviewer in Berlin asking questions. They feed several German interviewers and Elijah sits there blankly looking at the camera and answering the questions that are coming through his earpiece. After that had happened three or four times Dominic, who was in Berlin, thought this was an opportunity for a great practical joke! So Dominic comes into the room in Berlin, puts on a German accent and he pretends to be a German interviewer. Elijah has got no idea whatsoever because Dom put on a great accent 'Ah, hello zere Mr Wood I am pleased to meet you'. And then Dom proceeds to ask Elijah the most outrageously rude questions and Elijah's got no idea. He's sat there being filmed and there's this absolute moron asking questions on the other side and he was videoed too. We've got this thing and it's the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life: seeing Elijah trying to hold it together when he's being bombarded with these horrible questions. It was so funny that we're going to stick it on the DVD.
